in god we trust

In God we Trust, why is it that god is mentioned in a currency we use in our every day life? Well its the official motto of the U.S; there has been many debates on having this phrase removed, many people feel that in a free country , a religious opinion shouldn’t be put on currency, also many people feels this violates the first amendment. in my opinion, it does not matter; i am an atheist but i don’t get mad that GOD is mentioned in our currency because i use money to buy things, not to have religious moments.  Also i believe that even thought the U.S itself its a “free” country, they are entitled to have an opinion on their beliefs and how they want to convey the idea of “GOD” through currency/
