My interpretation of painting is that there is a bunch of people in which are surrounding the trinity. The painting shows God the father holding a crucifix with a still-alive Jesus. Above them, in a cloud of light surrounded by cherubims, is the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. God the father wears an impartial crown and a wide gilt cloak, lined in green and supported by angels. Below, the human multitudes are divided between religious men and women, led by the Holy Roman Emperor. The lower sections depicts a large landscape with the dawn above a lake, among hills. I think that this painting is showing how anyone can really follow God. The painting shows both men and women along with people of different classes. You can see a cardinal who is wearing rich garments and is putting down his hat. Along with a peasant, with one of his tools, who represents the poor classes. An enigmatic queen whose face is hidden by a veil, which leaves only the eyes visible is also depicted in the painting. With this, it also shows you the trinity or the three divine persons in God. Furthermore showing you what that God represents all these things to the people who believe and follow him.

  1. This is indeed an interesting paint. I agree with your overall interpretation. I find it interesting how you interpreted that anyone can follow God, that it really does not matter your status or else, just your faith. We can also see how this painting portrays the feminine figure as an important aspect of religion.

  2. I found this painting very fascinating and mind opening as well. Your interpretation on the trinity sounds about as right and I do agree with you also! I can see also that the human multitudes are divided between religious men and women, led by the Holy Roman Emperor in the picture given. The painting does portray many different things but in my opinion I think the most important thing it shows is how God represents all these things to the people who believe and follow him and also as well trust in him and give him faith.
